Reference management software

Welcome!

In this guide we have gathered essential information about reference management software. The software will help you to collect and organise your references and documents.

When you use a reference management software program, you export references from a database or library catalogue to create a central library of all your references in the program. If a reference you want to use is not in a database repository or library catalogue, you may add it manually. You can integrate the software into MS Word to create automatic literature references in your text.

There are many different reference management softwares, some are free to use and some require a licence. Here you can read more about the softwares Zotero and EndNote.

  • Zotero - for you who are a student, this is a free and easily accessible program.
  • EndNote - requires a license, and as an employee at MDU you have access to the program.

Do you need help?

The library offers guidance on how to use reference management software.

  • Student? Welcome to our drop-in for questions about Zotero.
  • Staff? Email the library to book guidance in EndNote. If there are several of you in a staff group who need help, we can book an occasion where we meet together. Keep an eye out for the library's research seminars, which are given regularly, where one of the sessions is about EndNote.
