An EndNote library is a database and for it to work properly, the program must save files in a specific order. An EndNote library is therefore sensitive to any type of automatic backup that can interfere with the application's own synchronisation process. Please do not save your EndNote library on cloud storage such as iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, Suite Sync, Google Drive, Box, etc.
Save your EndNote library to a location that is on your local hard drive on your computer and that cannot be synchronised by a third party. If your computer is synchronised automatically, you must actively go in and ensure the library is saved on your local computer. As soon as you have created a library with a large number of references, it is advisable to save a compressed library file as a back-up in case something should happen to your computer. You can save the compressed library file to any location.
If your compressed library (.enlx) is saved to OneDrive or any cloud storage (OneDrive, SharePoint, Box Sync, Google Drive, and iCloud), we recommend that you copy the files to another location on your computer before opening them.
When you download EndNote and are about to open the program for the first time, you will be given the choice that you want to create a new library.
Your EndNote library will then be automatically saved in the Documents folder under This PC.
When MDU does a back-up, it synchronises the content on your computer to OneDrive, so it will therefore also sync your EndNote library. This can create problems and the files can become corrupted. To ensure that the files do not become corrupt, please follow these steps:
